STOP THE VIOLENCE (Pt.5)

May 5th

It’s a “Stop the Violence” (part 5) Day

LORD, GOD HELP US TO DO WHAT WE CAN TO STOP THE VIOLENCE AND SAVE THE CHILDREN. AMEN.

Here are some specific things that we all can do to help stop the violence. Some can be done right away while others may take some time. Some suggestions don’t require any help, but others require advice and assistance from local or national groups.

TEN Things Adults Can Do:

1) Teach children how to reduce their risk of being victims of violent crime. Insist on knowing at all times where your children are, what they are doing and who they are with.

2) Get involved. Volunteer to help in community and neighborhood anti-crime and other community improvement efforts. Encourage groups you belong to – religious, civic, fraternal, social – to help stop violence and crime.

3) Use common-sense tips to reduce your risk of being a crime victim. Stay in well-lighted, busy areas; travel with a friend if possible; walk in a confident, assured way. Avoid known trouble spots.

4) Report crimes and suspicious activities to police; agree to testify when necessary. Stand up for what you believe in if you want a safe community.

5) Get to know your neighbors and agree to look out for each other. Get organized and know your local police personnel.

6) Find ways to settle arguments without violence. If you resort to violence to settle disputes, this is what you will teach your children. Be a good role model.

7) Don’t carry a weapon unless you can do so legally and take a training course on how to use it and store it. Use common courtesy. It helps ease tensions that can lead to violence. Teach your children that good manners are important.

8) Don’t support illegal activities, such as buying stolen property or using or selling illegal drugs. It’s the wrong message to send to a child, and it involves you on criminal activity.

9) Volunteer your home as a safe house for neighborhood latch-key children. Make it a reliable source of help for children who are scared or need assistance.

10) Develop a sound spiritual life that is grounded in a solid relationship with God. Learn to pray so that you can develop a spirit in you that is full of love, faith, hope, goodness, and forgiveness.

Yes, the problem of violence is a problem for all of us. Deep in my heart, I do believe we can solve it if we realize and remember that: “Nobody can do Everything, but Everybody can do Something, and if Everybody is doing Something then Everything will get done!” AMEN SOMEBODY! So what are you going to do to help stop the violence?
