“It’s Well With My Soul” Day
LORD, WE WILL GIVE YOU THANKS, AND PRAISE YOUR NAME IN ALL THINGS AND AT ALL TIMES
Some of the greatest hymns of the church have been written out of hearts in deepest sorrow. A striking example is a hymn that is very dear to me; it is well-known and widely loved: “It Is Well With My Soul.” Now the story is told that as a special treat to his wife and four children, Chicago businessman H.G. Spafford gave them a trip to Europe. Mrs. Spafford and the children sailed from New York in November 1873, aboard the French luxury liner “S.S.Ville du Havre.” All was pleasant sailing for the first several days.
But at 2 am. on November 22, while sailing on quiet waters, the liner was accidentally rammed by the British iron sailing boat “Lochearn.” Within two hours of the tragedy, the ship settled to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, taking with it 226 persons, among them the four Spafford children. Nine days later, Mrs. Spafford contacted her husband by telegraph from Cardiff, Wales saying: “Saved alone.” Her husband’s immediate reply was: “I am so glad to trust The Lord when it will cost me something.”
As soon as he could, Mr. Spafford booked passage on another ship and was soon crossing the Atlantic to join his grief-stricken wife. On the way over- according to the account carried in Ernest K. Emurian’s book, “Sing the Wondrous Story”, Spafford was told by the captain of the ship when they were over the waters where the Ville du Havre had gone down. Unable to sleep that night, but sustained in his sorrow by a great faith, the father composed what was to become a great hymn of the church:
“When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul. It is well, with my soul, it is well, it is well, with my soul.”
Into each life, some rain will fall. As we live we will have trials and tribulations. There will be heartache. There will be storms that will come. So the question is when the rains fall when trials come when the heartache is too much to bear when the storm of life is raging, will you still love The Lord? Will you still praise Him? Will you say like Brother Spafford, “It is well, Yes Lord It is well, with my soul?” AMEN, In The House Somebody!
