ARE YOU A SOLDIER

November 11th

It’s an “Are You a Soldier?” Day

LORD, WE AS WE HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN MILITARY SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, HELP US AS LIVE AS SOLDIERS IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD. AMEN.

Today we pause to give thanks to those who have served in our various branches of the military. We do say, “Thank You, and God Bless You!” Now just like America and other nations have Military Forces so does the Kingdom of God. We find Paul throughout his writings, proclaiming Christians as soldiers for our Lord Jesus Christ. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul tells us to endure hardships as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

Now, even thou God’s Kingdom has a Military Force, its design, philosophies, equipment and a way of life is different from man’s.  In fact, when the two are compared we find that they are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

You see . . . Man’s soldier is trained for war, but God’s soldier is trained for peace.  Man’s soldier is told to hate the enemy, but God’s soldier is commanded to love his enemy.  Man’s soldier is trained to use violence, but God’s soldier is trained to use Non-Violence.

For the difference in the two is the fact that God’s Military Force is headed by our God himself.  It is broken into several divisions as Eph. 4:11 tells us, “He gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelist and some pastors and some teachers, and if you’d allow me I’d like to paraphrase that by saying and some deacons and some trustees, and some deaconess and some ushers and some missionaries and some singers just to name a few.

Yes, all in all, there is something for everybody because everybody is somebody!  A special somebody with a special calling to join and work in God’s Special Military Force!

Now, even though there might be different branches or divisions, the joining regulations are the same for everyone.  The first rule for entry has nothing to do with your past for whosoever will let him come!  And all you have to do is confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead – in other words, just call on the name of the Lord, and you’re a Born Again Soldier in God’s Military Force, proclaiming that old Christian Hymn . . . .  “We are soldiers in the army, and we have to fight, all thou we have to die.  We have to hold up the Bloodstained Banner; we have to hold it up until we die!”

Now, the soldier of the Cross uses a codebook known as the Holy Bible which was given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.  The troops are taught to fight the good fight of faith, laying hold of eternal life, realizing that the race doesn’t go the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to He who endures until the end!

Now, this battle is a serious one for it is not against human agencies but against the evil supernatural powers of Satan!

God’s fight is not with man.  God’s fight is not man against man.  “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness, of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

And because the struggle is tough, because sin is real, the Lord’s troops must put on the whole armor of God that they may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

You see, in God’s Military, we don’t use fatigues because we have our loins girded about with Truth.  We wear the breastplate of righteousness; our feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace.

We don’t use tanks because we take the shield of faith so that we can quench all of the fiery darts of the wicked.

We don’t use MX Missiles or M-16’s because we take the helmet of Salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God!

Moreover, we don’t need nuclear weapons because we pray in the spirit.  And if prayer can’t do it, it can’t be done!

But there’s more, for you see, Man’s Military Force only takes you to the grave, but God’s Military Force has a power thru Christ that takes the sting out of death and robs the grave of its victory.

For when we leave this branch of earth, When we lay down our weapons and study war no more, — we get inducted into the reserves in that land called the Sweet Bye and Bye!

That place where the Navy is the crew of the Ship of Zion,

The Air Force is the Host of Angels,

The Marines are those who are stained by martyr’ blood,

The Army is that Great Multitude that washed their robes and made the white by the Blood of the Lamb!

And I want you to know that I’m a Soldier in God’s Military Force.

I’m a soldier, marching to Zion,

I’m a soldier of the Cross,

I’m a soldier holding up the blood-stained Banner,

I’m a soldier moving up the Kings Highway,

I’m a Soldier with mind stayed on Jesus,

It gets hard sometimes, but I’m a Soldier!  It gets rough sometimes, but I’m a Soldier!

It gets dreary sometimes, but I’m a Soldier!  It gets tough sometimes, but I’m a Soldier!

I get tired sometimes, but I’m a soldier!  I get weary sometimes, but I’m a Soldier!

And I don’t mind because I’m a Soldier, for Emmanuel,

I’m a Soldier for the One, who is altogether lovely,

I’m a Soldier for King of Kings, Lord of Lords,

Yes, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord.

And I promised Him that I would Serve Him till I die.  Yes, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord!

So I ask you “Are you a Soldier?”
