WE MADE IT

October 10th

It’s a “We Made It” Day

LORD, WE THANK YOU FOR BIRTHDAYS. AS WE CELEBRATE WE REMEMBER THAT EACH DAY THAT YOU GIVE TO US ON THIS EARTH IS A REASON TO CELEBRATE. WE GIVE YOU HONOR AND PRAISE THIS DAY THAT MY MOMMA GAVE BIRTH TO ME.  AMEN.

We as African-Americans know the meaning of these words, “We Made It.”  Now, I know as well as anybody that we still have a long way to go, but when we compare the situation now to what it used to be, we can say, “We Made It.”

We haven’t always had two cars, three and four televisions, a closet full of nice clothes, dozens of pairs of shoes, split-level suburban homes, ice – dispensing refrigerators, automatic washers, and dryers. No! For some of us can remember when we had 3 choices as to how we would get to church, school or work.  We would walk, run, or trot, but We Made It!

We knew exactly what we were going to wear.  It was that faded hand me down from big brother or big sister, but We Made It. Many of us lived in houses where the roof was so thin that we could lie in bed and count the stars but, We Made It.” We had buckets and pans stationed under various leaks, and the rhythmic pitter-patter of dripping water would play a soothing lullaby and put us to sleep yet, “We Made It.”  Our parents didn’t make a lot of money, but “We Made It.”  They were the last to be hired and the first to be fired, but “We Made It.”

Our slave fore-parents worked from sun up until sun down, but “We Made It!” They never made a payday, but “We Made It.” When freedom came, they became sharecroppers and never got out of debt, but “We Made It.” A lot of us went in back doors and sat on back seats, but “We Made It.” We went to run down schools and studied from second-hand books, but “We Made It.” Yes by the Grace of God, we as African – Americans can say, “We Made It.”

For years, we’ve had many ups and downs, but “We Made It.”  We know how it feels to be almost to the ground but, “Thank You, Jesus, We Made It.” The mountains got a little too high, “But We Made It.”  Sometimes our friends made us cry, but still “We Made It.”  We’ve had to drink from the old bitter cup, but We Made It. We got tired, but we never gave up, so we are able to say, “Thank you, Jesus, We Made It.” It seems as if I can hear somebody saying, Well, How did you make it?

John Newton answered that question a long time ago when he wrote:

Amazing Grace How Sweet the Sound

That Saved a Wretch like Me,

I Once was Lost, but now I’m Found.’

Was Blind, But now I See

Through Many Dangers Toils and Snares

We have Already Come,

“Tis Grace,” that Brought Us   Safe thus Far;

And Grace” Will Lead us Home.

Today I’m blessed to celebrate My Birthday. Thanks be to GOD I MADE IT, I MADE ANOTHER YEAR!!!!
