HARAMBEE M.Y.A. CHILD

The following is a letter of support for my “HARAMBEE M.Y.A.-Pull It Together & Manage Your Attitude Child” Anger Management Program for children.

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Sam Lannetti. I am a third grade teacher at Chester Community Charter School. During the past school year, I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Brown and experiencing my class’s participation in his Harambee M.Y.A. program.

Many of our students live in areas where violence and poverty are common in their lives. In the two years I have been teaching at CCCS, I have had students who have experienced such hardships as emotional abuse, physical abuse, neglect, hunger, homelessness, the struggles that come from broken families, and the loss of family members to drug abuse and shootings. Events like these can be extremely traumatizing for children and many times they are unable to emotionally process their reactions to their situations. This often results in students exhibiting behavioral outbursts, anger issues, fighting, and many other unhealthy reactions to what they are dealing with in their home lives on a daily basis.

During the past school year, I have seen Dr. Brown’s program work successfully for the students in my classroom. They have learned to deal with their emotions in a way that is healthy and productive and to respond to behavioral triggers appropriately. I have seen students learn to identify, talk about, and express their emotions productively. I have had several parents tell me that they have seen positive changes in their children as a result of the Harambee M.Y.A. program. My students were excited for Dr. Brown to come into our classroom each week. They would beg me to be a part of his M.Y.A. Elite Drill Team. They not only learned from and benefitted from his program, but also enjoyed it tremendously.

The Harambee M.Y.A. program has also been beneficial for the teachers and staff in our building. Although we knew that many of our students come from difficult situations, Dr. Brown opened our eyes to what some of them are specifically dealing with and just how challenging some of our students’ situations really are. We have also been given tools and strategies that have been extremely helpful in understanding, responding to, and empathizing with many our students’ behaviors.

I strongly recommended that this program continue to be implemented throughout CCCS and that it would be considered for any school with students who come from a similar background to ours. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Best,

Sam Lannetti
