MY MOTHER’S FAITH

It’s a “MY MOTHER’S FAITH” Sunday.
LORD WE THANK YOU FOR THE LOVE OUR MOTHERS GAVE US AND THE FAITH SHE TAUGHT US. AMEN.
“This article is dedicated to My Mother, Mrs. Gwendolyn C. Brown”
The Apostle Paul was also the proud possessor of a deep and abiding faith and he admired this quality in others.   That is why we find him saying to Timothy:  “When I call to remembrance, the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother, Lois and thy mother, Eunice and I am persuaded that in thee also.” (II Timothy 1:5)
There are many of us including myself who have like Timothy caught the faith by which we live from our mothers and grandmothers.  It has been said that no other force in the life of a child is as strong an influence as is his mother.
Jesus in the great crisis of His life, His temptation and crucifixion fed His spirit with passages from the Old Testament, which He had learned at His mothers’ feet.
Yes, down thru the centuries the mother has been a stabilizing factor in the shaping of history.  “The future destiny of the child,” said Napoleon, is always the work of the mother.”
After becoming President, Abraham Lincoln generously said, “All that I am or can become, I owe to my angel mother.”
Theodore Roosevelt put it this way: “The Mother is the one supreme asset of the national life. She is more important by far than the successful statesman, businessman, artist or scientist.”
If ever there was a need for Godly mothers with a deep abiding faith, it is today.  For mothers have always been the translators of faith.  Faith in our own sense of somebodiness, dignity, worth and awareness that God is no respecter of persons. To Him, red, yellow, black or white is beautiful. For God is not hung up on complexion or clothes, but rather on the contents of one’s character.
Now, by faith, I do not mean mere blind uncritical credulity.  For faith is not believing things you know aren’t so, as a small boy once defined it.  Neither is faith magical formulas by the mere repetition of which supernatural powers are harnessed to do your bidding.
Nor is faith a body of religious dogma, something once and for all delivered to the saints.  No! Faith is rather, reason in a courageous mood as L.P. Jacks has defined it.
It is “betting your life there is a God,” to use the words of Donald Hankey.  Josiah Royce once but it like this, “Faith is the soul’s insight or discovery of some reality that enables a man to stand anything that can happen to him in the universe.”  Paul himself put it like this:  “Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.”
Beloved the Sunday school will train the child; the Church will provide Christian nurture, but nothing can take the place of the home and mother in providing spiritual leadership.  No child has ever lived a right life that has not been chastised by a woman’s love, strengthened by her courage, guided by her discretion and nurtured by her faith. I want to testify and say, “I am what I am because of my mother’s faith and my grandmothers prayers.”  My mother shared with me the meaning and power of faith. For she taught me that fear imprisons but faith liberates.  Fear paralyzes, but faith empowers. Fear sickens but faith heals. But most of all, my mother taught me that fear puts hopelessness at the heart of life while faith rejoices in its’ God-given eternal life!
My Father’s Children, as we celebrate this Mother’s Day, let us not only celebrate her love, but let us also celebrate her faith!  For my mother had a faith which caused her to believe that if you train a child in the way that he should go when he is old he shall not depart from it.
For it was my mother who taught me that:  “God numbers the hairs on our head.”  It was my mother who taught me about the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
It was my mother who taught me that, God is like a mother to the motherless and a father to the fatherless!
It was my mother who taught me that, I must do unto others, as I would have others do unto me!
It was my mother who taught me that, “Patience is a virtue and that a man’s word is his bond.”
It was my mother who taught me that, “What’s done under the roof will be seen on the housetop.”
It was my mother who taught me to say:  “The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want.”
Yes, I’m a Christian today, because of My Mothers Faith and My Grandmothers Prayers.
